Head lice are unfortunately very common, but there are many misunderstandings about how they spread.
Here are some examples of 'lice myths'.
- "Head lice are a sign of poor hygiene"
In fact, lice like clean hair as much as they like dirty hair. Infestation occurs when lice have the opportunity to move from one child's head to another's. There is no need to be embarrassed if you discover your child has head lice – it does not mean you have been failing in your duties as a parent.
- "Head lice spread via hats, hair brushes, bedclothes etc."
This CAN be true. Lice can spread this way, but rarely. Head lice need the warmth of a human head and human blood to survive.
- "Headlice carry diseases"
In the UK, head lice do not carry diseases. They are a nuisance, and the itching they can cause is unpleasant and distressing, but they are not dangerous.
- "Cats and dogs can carry head lice"
Head lice only live in human hair and are not passed from pets to human beings. Different species of lice live on animals.
